Readings: Take 1
Welcome to the CineConnections® collection of the latest Readings on the subjects of film and romance we’ve come across on the web, and which we are delighted to share with you, the discerning single (or otherwise) cinephile.
Cinema and romance is what we’re all about at CineConnections®…
…and we work night and day to strive to learn more and do everything we can to bring film lovers together. Except for a few days there at the beginning of every month, because, come on: it’s the beginning of the month. (IYKYK).
We also scour the internet and social media (do you watch our stories curated daily on Instagram? You do? Wow, that’s awesome, thank you very much!) tirelessly to plumb the fathomless depths of those fathomless topics, love and movies. In this first of our occasional Readings series, we take the pulse of the culture at large through the lens of love, films, and love of films:
— Did you know Psychology Today publishes film reviews? You did? That will be $150, please. We kid, but Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist Ira Israel isn’t kidding around in his review for PT of the new horror film Obsession, which he suggests explores not love ungained, but the horror of love overgained;
— Speaking of Obsession, Dazed magazine offers 7 suggestions for unnerving movies in a similarly disturbing vein;
— Connoisseurs of amorous aesthetic disturbance — or, maybe just panic attacks — will appreciate Collider Magazine’s “10 Most Anxiety-Inducing Romance Movies, Ranked.” Rankings are always nerve-wracking (perhaps we project):
— All of this focus in recent films on turbulence in romantic relationships: are we, in fact, too cynical for love? In this piece for Glamour discussing Kristoffer Borgli’s new film The Drama, Meg Walters considers the rise of the “anti rom-com”;
— Maybe there’s something healthy about adoring films that highlight messy relationships — in this piece for Vogue India, Nona Uppal suggests, by watching such films, her “horizon of what real love entails has broadened”;
— Enough with the downs with love! It’s InStyle Magazine to the rescue once again, this time with their list of the 33 best movie kisses of all time, from La Dolce Vita to Titanic;
— The talented writers at The Guardian offer their recommendations for best movie romances “full of emotional wisdom” which you might not have seen;
— For those looking for streaming suggestions, here’s Entertainment Weekly’s 12 best romance movies on Hulu to swoon over;
— To close out this premiere Readings post, here’s the venerable Reader’s Digest’s list of the Top 60 romance movies of all time, a sometimes eclectic list from the RD crew ranging from Brief Encounter to My Oxford Year.
